Insurance Changes after Divorce

Insurance Changes after DivorceGetting a divorce is never an easy process. Along with dividing your assets, you also have to consider your insurance policies. Make sure to look into these insurance policies before your sign the final papers.

  • Auto insurance. When you split up your auto insurance policies, you will no longer be able to qualify for a multi-policy discount. Luckily, there are many other factors that go into considering your premiums, such as your driving history.
  • Health insurance. If you are currently covered under your spouse’s employer sponsored health insurance, you will lose coverage once you are separated. If your employer does not offer health insurance, you will have to get an individual policy.
  • Life insurance. Since you will no longer have your spouse as a dependent, you may be able to lower the amount of coverage you have for life insurance.
  • Renter’s insurance. If you move out of your shared home to rent a new home, you will have to invest in a renter’s insurance policy to ensure you have the right amount of protection.
